Megan's Yoga Tribe
"The transition to Kenko was incredibly easy. We’ve seen a remarkable 147% growth in our client base. Opening our second studio did contribute to this increase but Kenko, too, played a crucial role."
“I tell anyone going into entrepreneurship that you need to love it enough that you will do it for free. I was in a position where I could have paid myself prior, but because of my financial trauma, I kept everything in the business.”
Megan Sevart-Culbertson
Stories of resilience and passion stand out in entrepreneurship, especially when intertwined with personal growth and community building. Megan Sevart-Culbertson perfectly embodies this blend.
From overcoming financial trauma to establishing a thriving six-figure yoga studio business, Megan’s journey is a testament to unwavering belief and dedication.
Her motto? “To keep doing what I truly believe in.”
Megan is not only the founder of Megan's Yoga Tribe but also a devoted mother of four.
Balancing motherhood with entrepreneurship, Megan seamlessly manages her roles, embodying the essence of a modern-day yogi mom.
Her commitment extends beyond running yoga studios—Megan's Yoga Tribe includes yoga teacher training schools, retreats, community events, workshops, and many health and wellness initiatives.
Megan’s introduction to yoga began after the birth of her first child. For 18 years, yoga has been her sanctuary—a place to quiet her mind, tune into her soul, and connect with her heart. This practice has grounded her and translated into her role as a present and mindful mother.
“My yoga practice translates into being the present mom I desire to be. I always say I'm doing my best, but ultimately, my husband is the better parent,” Megan shares humbly.
Megan’s entrepreneurial spirit ignited at age 20 when she launched her first business—tanning salons. However, this venture quickly became a source of distress, leading to a million-dollar debt by age 21.
Despite the initial allure, Megan realised that the tanning business clashed with her values, causing significant soul-searching throughout her twenties.
“Yoga became a pivotal part of my life. I decided to go through yoga teacher training while I still owned my other companies, and that was where I transformed my life,” Megan recounts.
After 15 years in a business that didn’t align with her true self, Megan boldly decided to sell her companies and commit fully to her passion. Thus, Megan's Yoga Tribe was born—a business deeply aligned with her mission and values.
Megan began teaching yoga in studios in 2009, treating it as a passion project. However, it wasn’t until 2020, after selling her previous businesses, that Megan officially founded Megan's Yoga Tribe.
Despite being relatively new, Megan has poured her heart and soul into building a community beyond yoga, offering retreats, teacher training, workshops, and various wellness programs.
Megan’s past financial struggles have shaped her approach to business. Determined to avoid debt, she financed Megan's Yoga Tribe with cash, expanding only when she was confident in the sustainability and capital of her venture.
“I have not taken out any loans. When we started, I was the only teacher, teaching every class. It was strategic because I didn't want to feel the burden of ever being in debt again,” Megan explains.
What sets Megan's Yoga Tribe apart is its strong sense of community. “I am an expert at creating a community,” Megan states.
By fostering deep connections and ensuring a judgement-free environment, Megan's studios offer more than just yoga classes—they provide a safe space for individuals to grow and heal.
With nearly 60 instructors, Megan also likes to be a student in her studios, continuously learning and connecting with her community.
Managing a successful business while being a busy mother requires intentional self-care. Megan prioritises activities like massages, facials, and family/solo travel to reset and recharge.
“Because I pour so much of my energy, heart, and soul into others, I need to reset and recharge these things to continue serving them in the way I desire,” she shares.
Megan opened her first physical location in her town, Lee Summit, in 2022 and was at capacity within 30 days. A year later, she opened her second studio. Around the same time, she opened her yoga teacher training school.
She also shares how 2024 is the first year she paid herself a salary for the first time.
“I'm ready to hire someone to manage me. It feels terrific to be on a payroll because I've worked for free for most of my adult life.”
Like many entrepreneurs, Megan faced significant challenges, particularly with technology.
“Technology has always been the biggest struggle. I cried more over technology than any other aspect of my business,” she admits.
With the help of her husband’s programmer friends on the website and a lot of trial and error, Megan navigated these hurdles, emphasising the importance of flexibility and problem-solving in entrepreneurship.
Megan’s approach to marketing is authentic and community-driven.
Collaborating with her branding manager, Cory Brown, Megan ensures that all content reflects the tribe’s values and mission. Her genuine care for people fosters strong client retention, with clients returning not just for the yoga classes but for the sense of belonging and support they receive.
She believes in a mix of paid marketing, partnerships and community service.
Megan envisions expanding Megan's Yoga Tribe by opening two to three more studios within three to five years. Additionally, she is focused on creating a succession plan to ensure her business's legacy continues seamlessly.
Personal aspirations include more travel, creating new traditions with her family, and fostering continued growth and sustainability within her studios.
Megan’s story powerfully reminds us that aligning business ventures with personal values and purpose leads to true fulfilment and success. Her advice to fellow entrepreneurs is clear:
“Know who you are in depth. When deeply connected to your purpose, you can live and lead with intention.”
When Megan Sevart-Culbertson decided to integrate Kenko into Megan's Yoga Tribe, she knew she was investing significantly in her business’s future. Reflecting on her journey, Megan shares how Kenko has been instrumental in her growth and operational efficiency.
"The sales experience with Kenko was terrific. I conducted thorough research and had six insightful calls with Vince before committing.
During our discussions, I shared detailed spreadsheets and plans, and Vince responded with genuine enthusiasm, saying, 'Wow, you have a lot going on.'
This level of engagement reassured me that I was making the right decision for my business.
Megan was particularly impressed with the smooth conversion process:
"The transition to Kenko was incredibly easy. Since implementing Kenko, we’ve seen a remarkable 147% growth in our client base. While opening our second studio certainly contributed to this increase, I firmly believe that Kenko played a crucial role in supporting our expansion and managing our growing community."
As a numbers-driven entrepreneur, Megan values systems that provide clear insights and facilitate scalable growth.
"Investing in Kenko ensured that our technology infrastructure matched the quality of our services. Being able to track our progress and scale effectively has been invaluable. Upgrading to Kenko has significantly contributed to our ability to manage operations efficiently and continue our upward trajectory."
